I’ll admit that early horror films weren’t really on my radar until college, where a then close friend of mine introduced me to the early days of cinema. This was done with mostly Humphrey Bogart mysteries, but one time he put on some of the Classic Universal Monster Films. My outlook on horror in films were never the same in only the best of ways. But it would still be a number of years before watched enough to appreciate the actors of the era fully. So needless to say the Evelyn Ankers has lit up my screen on more than a few occasions since. Often (and rightly so) heralded as the original scream queen appearing a large number of horror films throughout the 1940s and was well-known for her screams. I’ve wondered why she isn’t a more recognized in classic cinema. I would have to say she and Gloria Stuart being my current favorite leading ladies of the era.
